John Santa's book; "Bluegrass Is My Second Language, A Year In The Life of An Accidental Bluegrass Musician" is a wonderful, folksy introduction to the world of bluegrass from one who started out to be an outsider but was quickly adopted into the fold.
Santa's book makes for one-of-a-kind Christmas presents when you want to introduce not bluegrass friends into the world we love. It also makes great reading for long-time bluegrass fans as well and you shouldn't feel selfish if it's a gift you purchase for yourself.
Santa weaves true-stories of his escapades at jam sessions and live performances into the other real-life occurrences he experienced. You get to meet his beloved dogs as they romp in and out of any and every jam session and amble and saunter on-stage in the middle of live performances just as welcome as if they were Earl Scruggs himself. You also get a very personal side of Santa as he relates the joys, trials and uncertainties of an emotional roller-coaster in those heart-warming sections where he relates his care-giver role for his aging father.
Even though Santa's down-home folksy writing style causes the book to read like a great fictional work, his accounting of real life in a bluegrass world in the South becomes a documentary of our times, music, lifestyles and culture.
Santa's book should be on your list this Christmas, it's recommended reading! And with a small note on your purchase order you can have an "Author's Inscription" written in the fly-leaf which makes for an even more unique and personalized gift.
Purchases are handled through Santa's website: http://www.bluegrassbook.com/ or at a half-dozen or so retailers in select locations which are also posted on his website.
