Wilkesboro, NC – Police officers in Wilkesboro, NC were summoned to the Wilkes Community College campus by authorities to investigate a burglary that probably occurred on Sunday. A theater used for a yearly nationwide event in Wilkes County was targeted by thieves for Christmas lights, according to police.
A Wilkesboro Police spokespersn said someone stole Christmas lights from the Doc and Merle Watson Theatre on the campus of Wilkes Community College.
Officers got a call from campus security Monday about the missing lights. A campus security guard told local TV News that he thinks the lights were taken sometime on Sunday. According to the guard, the lights were there Saturday when a church group held an event at the theater.
He said that seven strands of 100 lights were taken. The lights were displayed around the outside of the theater's exterior.
The theater is the site of Merlefest and is located on Wilkes Community College's campus. It is also leased by organizations and community groups for private functions.
