Bristol, VA- The Appalachian Cultural Music Association will release a documentary to the public on Sunday, September 30th at 3:00 pm at the ACMA Pickin’ Porch located on the upper level of the Bristol Mall in Bristol, Virginia. There will be plenty of live bluegrass and old time music at the event to celebrate the project’s release.
“Our documentary has been 18 months in the making and is a very interesting look at the history of our region’s role in the birth of country, bluegrass and old time music”, states John Necessary, president of the non-profit organization.
Chris Rector produced the ACMA’s documentary which will be available on DVD at the fundraising event. There are two edited versions of the documentary, one 40-minute version and another 90-minute version both included on the same DVD.
The video covers the work of the ACMA’s all volunteer organization including their Mountain Music Museum which is open 7 days a week at the Bristol Mall, the ACMA’s Pickin Porch which is presented every Thursday night at 7:00 pm at the Bristol Mall for the past 15 years, the ACMA’s connection with the Carter Family Fold in Hilton’s, Virginia, the ACMA’s support of Song of the Mountains, the nationally syndicated public television series based at the Lincoln Theatre in Marion, Virginia as well as the ACMA’s funding of two scholarships at ETSU in Johnson City, Tennessee for their bluegrass, old time and country music program. The video also concentrates on the history of the music born in the southern Appalachian region.
“We are offering the release of our new documentary in a unique way”, says Necessary. “On Sunday, September 30th we will present a two hour concert at the Pickin’ Porch stage at the Bristol Mall. Area bands will donate their time and talent to support the ACMA. Tickets will be $ 10.00. Everyone who purchases a ticket to this show will receive our new DVD absolutely free!” All proceeds go to the ACMA.
Scheduled to perform on the ACMA’s Pickin Porch stage on Sunday, September 30th are the Whitetop Mountain Band, the VW Boys, the ETSU Bluegrass and Old Time Pride Bands, the Skinners, Appalachian Trail, Teddy Helton & Friends and more!
Included in the ACMA’s documentary are interviews from Rita Forrester of the Carter Family Fold, Daniel Boner from the ETSU Bluegrass, Old Time & Country Music Program, Tim White, co-founder of the ACMA and host of Song of the Mountains, Hunter Berry, fiddler for Rhonda Vincent & the Rage, the legendary Larry Sparks, James Allen Shelton, guitar player for Dr. Ralph Stanley and many other people from the southern Appalachian region who are respected in the music business.
The Whitetop Mountain Band provides music throughout the ACMA’s documentary. The documentary was supported in part by Peer Music based in Nashville, Tennessee.
“Our hope is that our new documentary will be an entertaining and educational tool for folks who love our music in this region. We have a great organization with many volunteers who make all of this happen. Our members have a genuine passion for what we do”, says Necessary. `”Free copies of our DVD will be offered to schools and libraries throughout our region.”
