Western Kentucky officials are looking at two cities in Tennessee as examples in their effort to make the city of Owensboro synonymous with bluegrass music.
Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne wants to rename that city’s “2nd Street” so that it reflects their growing reputation as a hub for the genre of music made popular by Kentucky native Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys.
Payne says Nashville, TN, which is known for country music, has Music Row and Memphis, TN, which is known for blues, has Beale Street.
He says he's already talked to Owensboro commission members and now he's ready to hear ideas from the public for renaming the street. Ideas can be sent by email to: mayor@owensboro.org. He did not indicate whether suggestions from non-Kentucky residents would be considered.
Owensboro is home to the International Bluegrass Music Museum, which is being relocated to a bigger block-long building located on the street to be renamed. The new facility will also house an indoor theater and outdoor festival seating.
The city also hosts the annual Bluegrass Roots & Branches Festival, which drew more than 20,000 people last year.
