According to a message sent to IBMA members today regarding pre-registration for World of Bluegrass events in Raleigh, NC this coming fall, a new sales tax that became effective on January 1, 2014 will impact the IBMA.
With this new tax, purchasing tickets online may also look different. For events which are taxable, the price you will see online includes the 7% sales tax.
Specifically, tax reform legislation passed by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2013 broadened the base of services to which sales tax would be applied, including admissions to “live entertainment.” Non-profit organizations that produce events, like the IBMA, are now required to collect and remit sales tax on tickets to performances which go on sale on or after January 1, 2014.
The IBMA wants to stress they have not raised ticket prices this year.
