Just four days short of his 89th birthday, George Shuffler died very peacefully at home of natural causes, surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral Services for George S. Shuffler will be held at 4:00 P.M. Thursday April 10, 2014 in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese, with Rev. Paul Dula and Ron Thomason officiating. Interment will follow in the Burke Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 until 9:00 P.M.at Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Gary, Joe Eddie, Mike, Scott, and Will Shuffler, Mike and Bob Benfield, close friends, Doug Butler, Dennis Jones, Danny Powell, Mike Ramsey and James Alan Shelton.
Memorials may be made to Lakeview Baptist Church, 4744 Lakeview Acres Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.

George Shuffler was born April 11, 1925 in Burke County, a son of the late William Gaines "Will" and Mary Martha Williams Shuffler and was a charter and faithful member of Lakeview Baptist Church. Over the years he served his church as a teacher, choir member and on numerous committees. He left home at the age of 17 to play on the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. George was known as a "Bluegrass Legend", and was important to the development of bluegrass music. He was widely acknowledged as the inventor of the cross picking style of guitar playing. George played with Don Reno, Jim & Jessie, the Osborne Brothers and for 20 years with The Stanley Brothers and Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys (he was known as the "Third Stanley Brother")
