Curly, who took over to front Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass band after Flatt's death,  hadn't fully recovered from a previous stroke suffered a year ago.

The recent stroke on Sunday, June 1st has left him with some left-side paralysis but he is able to participate in therapy in a rehabilitation center in Hendersonville, TN.

His career path intertwined with  Charlie Monroe (after the breakup with his brother Bill Monroe), Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, Jim and Jesse McReynolds, Mac Wiseman, the Stanley Brothers, and many others.

Curly Seckler retired from music and the road in 1994 and was honored by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2004.  In 2005 he released: SIXTY YEARS OF BLUEGRASS WITH MY FRIENDS on the Copper Creek Label.   He is 94.

STROKE STATISTICS FROM THE CDC

  • Stroke is a leading cause of death in the United States, killing nearly 130,000 Americans each year—that’s 1 of every 19 deaths.
  • About 87% of all strokes are ischemic strokes, when blood flow to the brain is blocked.
  • The country's highest death rates from stroke are in the southeastern United States.
  • Although stroke risk increases with age, strokes can—and do—occur at any age. In 2009, 34% of people hospitalized for stroke were younger than 65 years.

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking are major risk factors for stroke. About half of Americans (49%) have at least one of these three risk factors. Several other medical conditions and unhealthy lifestyle choices can increase your risk for stroke.
