Mark Roberson Freeman, a member of the bluegrass and Gospel group PATHWAY, passed away Wednesday night, September 2, 2015, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC
Freeman was born May 9, 1959, in Surry County, NC, to Robert Eldridge and Georgia Johnson Freeman.
He was a family member of the highly acclaimed Mountain Roads Recordings project: CLOSE KIN - A REUNION OF BLUEGRASS AND OLD-TIME MUSIC where he added his bluegrass banjo to the songs: "Tennessee Grey Eagle" and "Seven Cent Cotton, Forty Cent Meat".
In PATHWAY, Mark handled Guitar and Banjo as well as lead, baritone and tenor vocals. He was one of the finest 5-string banjo players around and also wrote many of the groups songs. Mark had won many awards for his banjo playing.
Prior to PATHWAY, Mark played in another band with his brother, Mitchel - Interstate Exchange. Notables who have played with the Freeman brothers include Alan Bibey and Sammy Shelor.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, September 5, 2015, at 2:00 PM at Salem Baptist Church, with Dr. Craig Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Salem Baptist Church. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
