The band visited the world-renowned hospital and research facility on Monday, February 8th with MACC founders, Darrel and Phyllis Adkins, to present the concert's earnings to Dr. Suzanne Baker of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. While at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, the band was able to see first-hand how the MACC aides in cancer research.
The band has performed at the MACC’s four-day summer music festival which benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for the past three years, and is excited to help further contribute to such a great cause. Flatt Lonesome believes in the MACC so much, that they take their summer vacation and spend all four days at the MACC festival.
Flatt Lonesome has been avid supporters of the MACC and their cause, particularly after first touring St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with Darrel and Phyllis Adkins in 2014. “I don’t think any of us realized how important it was until we got the opportunity to go visit [St. Jude Children's Research Hospital] with Darrel and Phyllis,” said Flatt Lonesome’s Kelsi Harrigill. “That was a life-changing experience.”
In late January, the band performed a special "Country Covers" online benefit concert. Broadcast live from Beans N’ Cream Coffeehouse in Cedarville, OH, fans from across the country viewed the performance live through Concert Window, by simply making a donation of their choice. Proceeds totaled $2,545.10 and were donated to the MACC to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s fight to end cancer.
While in Memphis preparing to visit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the band learned that they had won two awards at the 42nd Annual Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA) awards show held in Nashville, TN on Sunday, February 7th. Flatt Lonesome was named Bluegrass Band of the Year at the awards show, as well as having their latest album, Runaway Train, named Album of the Year. The band had performed at the annual SPBGMA music festival and conference on Saturday, February 6th, where they celebrated their fifth anniversary as a band, before heading to Memphis. The awards were graciously accepted by Flatt Lonesome's manager, Andrea Roberts.
"We are so grateful for the prestigious awards which Flatt Lonesome received at the 42nd Annual SPBGMA awards show last weekend," says Flatt Lonesome's Kelsi Harrigill. "SPBGMA is where Flatt Lonesome first performed as a band, exactly five years ago this past weekend. We appreciate all that SPBGMA does for bluegrass music." She is also appreciative of the support the band has received since their first show in 2011. "Thanks to everyone in the bluegrass community who has supported us. Your love and encouragement has been overwhelming. We are humbled and grateful, and are honored to be a part of the bluegrass community."
