“Madelia is in my home county, Watonwan County, Minn., and it’s where my dad works,” said Buller. “I wanted to do something to help in the relief effort and this previously-unrecorded song by Mark Simos and Lisa Aschman (which I have loved for years) immediately came to mind.”For a limited time, “Phoenix Arise”, as performed by the Becky Buller Band, is available as a digital download only at MadeliaStrong.com for a donation with all money from these downloads going directly to the Madelia Strong relief fund.
An explosion in one of the downtown businesses is blamed for sparking the fire that destroyed much of the downtown strip of this Southwestern Minnesota prairie town of approximately 2,300.
Over 100 firefighters from nine area towns and four surrounding counties responded to the blaze, although hampered by the blizzard conditions. Retired Madelia firefighter Jim Peterson, who owns Madelia Culligan on the downtown strip, made the painful decision to destroy his own building in order to save the rest of the main street block.
Total losses are estimated at $1.4 million. To date, $475,000 has been raised. Extra aid for Madelia from the state of Minnesota is currently tied up in a special session of the legislature.
Special thanks to Mark Simos and Lisa Aschmann for the use of their song, “Phoenix Arise”, as well as to artist Steven Klassen from Mountain Lake, Minn., for original artwork for the single.
