Banjos, Music and Running

imageThe Earl Scruggs Center and Plaster Family Dentistry present the 8th annual Rhythm and Roots 5k Walk/Run and 10k Run starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, October 14, 2017.

Live music kicks off the event with participants enjoying live music at a number of locations along the route.



Musicians on the route include Wiregrass and Shady Oak Ramblers. Additional music provided by music sponsors Newgrass Brewing Company at the corner of Warren and Lafayette and Banker’s House will be sponsoring the music at their site at Lafayette Street/Wells.

KNOW A BANJO PLAYER? Banjo players are invited to join in to play at the kick off in honor of Earl Scruggs. Wiregrass will kick the race off to Foggy Mountain Breakdown, sure to get your feet moving!

An after race celebration takes place with refreshments and live music by Harvest with an awards ceremony following the image5K walk/run and then following the 10K to congratulate the top three overall male and female finishers for each race and the top three male and female finishers in each age group. Youth participant finishers receive a Rhythm & Roots Run youth participation award.

Plaster Family Dentistry is again making it possible for one school’s PTO to win $250 dollars and have a personalized trophy they can display at their school until the 2018 Rhythm & Roots Run (October 13, 2018). The award goes to the school that has the most students, teachers and parents participate in either the 5K or 10K event.

Registration is available through race day. Registration is available through the Earl Scruggs Center website at www.EarlScruggsCenter.org or by visiting the Earl Scruggs Center during regular operating hours. The 5k walk/run is $25 dollars through September 23rd. The 10k run is $30 dollars through September 23rd. $5 dollar discount available for youth, active duty military/family members and veterans. Rate increases September 23rd at 11:59 pm. Rates increase again on October 13th.

If you haven’t visited the Earl Scruggs Center or experienced the current special exhibit, David Holt: Photos, Music & Stories, make plans to! Race participants receive half off their exhibit admission through February 2018 by showing your race bib at guest services. All active duty military their families and veterans receive free exhibit thanks to the generous support of our exhibit presenting sponsor, The City of Shelby.

The Earl Scruggs Center is free to Cleveland County residents with valid ID on Wednesdays. Regular hours of operation are Wednesday 10 am-6 pm, Thursday – Saturday 10 am – 4 pm and Sunday 1 pm – 5 pm.
