Warren Hellman, the philanthropist, who created the internationally-renowned Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco, died last evening at age 77 due to complications from leukemia.
Hellman was also best known for leading his band, The Wronglers, with whom he performed at area festivals and concerts. He performed regularly on Northern California Bluegrass Society stages during the last decade. A portion of Golden Gate Park was renamed “Hellman Hollow” last week.
A public celebration of his life will be held in January.
