For 40 years, Bill Knowlton has been hosting his “Bluegrass Ramble” radio show, the last 37 on WCNY-FM, making it the oldest existing bluegrass and acoustic old-time music program in the Northeast.
Now, thanks to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, all those programs will be preserved in the National Archive.
Knowlton who received the IBMA’s distinguished achievement award in 2011 began his career with the Bluegrass Ramble program in 1959 on the university station WFUV-FM and later moved it to WBZY in Torrington, CT. He has also produced and narrated a 52 hour Bluegrass Ramble Television show for PBS that was broadcast across the nation in the mid-1980s.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is gathering the recordings for the American Archive, a nationwide digital archive of 40,000 hours of public broadcasting content.
“Taxpayers have funded more than half a century of local, regional and national television and radio programming, and the American Archive will serve as a return on that investment,” said Patricia Harrison, president and CEO of CPB, in a news release.
CPB is a private, nonprofit corporation created by Congress in 1967, is the steward of the federal government’s investment in public broadcasting.
“Bluegrass Ramble,” with host Bill Knowlton, continues to air from 9 p.m. to midnight Sundays on WCNY-FM 91.3.
