Bluegrass Broadcaster Larry McDaniel Dead at 72

Image634929642534817698Detroit Bluegrass Radio Broadcaster Larry McDaniel has died.  His public radio show, “Arkansas Traveler” was named after his home state but his long running public radio program was heard on WDET, Detroit.

McDaniel passed away in the middle of the night on January 4, 2013 but cause of death was not reported.

The Arkansas Traveler Radio program was heard on WDET from 1977 to 2004 and from 2005-2009.   In 2004 station programming decisions didn’t have room for McDaniel’s show and it was taken off the schedule causing an outburst from the listening public and a matching decline in pledges.  The station brought McDaniel back the following year but ultimately cancelled the show once again in 2009.

Funeral arrangements will be announced.

Larry's show changed my life. I can never thank him enough.

I'll never forget that Tony Rice show, when Larry got to do the introduction, and the audience cheered him for 10 minutes before letting him bring gon the band. He was so nonplussed!

Arkansas Traveller, bless you dear, and keep playing that sweet music in Bluegrass Heaven.
