Dark Shadow Recording is pleased to announce the radio release of “Southern Flavor,” the second single from Becky Buller’s highly anticipated new album, ‘Tween Earth And Sky.
“To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time anyone has assembled an all-Bluegrass Boy band to record a song of Mr. Monroe’s with new lyrics approved by the Big Mon himself,” said Stephen Mougin, owner of Dark Shadow Recording and producer of this project. “We want to send a great big thanks out to Becky’s dad, Emory Buller, for suggesting it.”
This cut features Buller on fiddle and vocal with the help of former Bluegrass Boys: Michael Feagan (fiddle), Peter Rowan (guitar/vocal), Buddy Spicher (fiddle), Roland White (mandolin), and Blake Williams (banjo).
“We did our best to recreate ‘the vibe’ of Mr. Monroe’s original cut, in arrangement, reverbs, etc.” said Mougin. “That included getting Michael Feagan, Buddy Spicher, and Blake Williams to join us, all of whom were on Mr. Monroe’s original version.”
The instrumental “Southern Flavor” was the title cut of Monroe’s 1988 album, which won the first-ever Bluegrass Grammy the following year. Sometime in the early nineties, Monroe asked friend and former Bluegrass Boy bass player Guy Stevenson to write words to this melody. Stevenson got together with DeWayne Mize and did just that. However, Monroe was never to return to the studio to re-record the number.
“Guy and I met at one of the International Bluegrass Music Museum’s Pioneers of Bluegrass Gatherings during the ROMP festival several years ago,” said Buller. “We hit it off and have written together several times since then. I’m honored he’d let me take a stab at this one.”
“On a sadder note,” she continued, “we lost DeWayne Mize very unexpectedly just a few days after we cut these tracks, so he never had a chance to hear them. I want to dedicate this to both him and Mr. Monroe.”
