Now, for the third time in just the last four years, award-winning Dobro player, Phil Leadbetter will be going through all the trials and tribulations of cancer treatments.
Doctors at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, TN have looked over Phil's most recent biopsies and have made the determination that Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, which is part of the body's immune system, has returned.
Phil says that once again, it's been caught in the early stages. This may enable him to be enrolled in a new clinical trial for a brand new cancer drug not yet approved by the FDA.
"That's what I'm looking for...cutting edge treatment," said Phil. If approved for the program, drugs will be given every 2 weeks at Vanderbilt. He asks friends and fans for prayers that he will be accepted into the program and thanks everyone for their support.
Hodgkin's lymphoma is one of two common types of cancers of the lymphatic system. The other type, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, is far more common. In Hodgkin's lymphoma, cells in the lymphatic system grow abnormally and may spread beyond the lymphatic system. As Hodgkin's lymphoma progresses, it compromises the body's ability to fight infection.
According to an educational publication by the Mayo Clinic, advances in diagnosis and treatment of Hodgkin's lymphoma have helped give people with this diagnosis the chance for a full recovery. The prognosis continues to improve for people with Hodgkin's lymphoma.
