"16 Tons" Contest from The Birthplace of Country Music!

Image635821342960655058With the over-abundance of country music songs covered by bluegrass musicians, it's a wonder that we can't find even one cover of Tennessee Ernie Ford's iconic hit, "Sixteen Tons"

But by December 4th, we could see and hear about 16 tons of new versions of the song thanks to a new contest sponsored by The Birthplace of Country Music in support of their new Tennessee Ernie Ford Exhibit - "Tennessee Ernie Ford: A Life on Stage," now open in the museum.

Now is your chance to record your own version of "Sixteen Tons," the Merle Travis-penned song about a coal miner first recorded by Travis and covered by many other great musicians.

A contest sponsored by The Birthplace of Country Music will give the first place winner the chance to perform their version of “16 Tons” at the exhibit’s closing concert, co-produced by the Paramount Chamber Players, on February 13, 2016 at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Bristol, TN.

No purchase is necessary to enter or win.

This contest is open to legal U.S. residents over the age of 15 except where prohibited by law, but parents or legal guardians must submit on behalf of any participants between the ages of 15 and 18.

Deadline for submission is Friday, December 4, 2015.

All submissions must be cover versions of “16 Tons” as recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford. For the purpose of this contest “Cover Version” will mean a new performance of the original song, though the music or lyrics may be altered by the participant.

To enter, you must upload a video of your performance to YouTube and, using the online entry form, send a link to your YouTube video.
