Check out Peter Rowan on the cover of Acoustic Guitar magazine. The issue including a feature interview with Peter is on newstands now!
"...Gonna see my smiling face on the cover of the Rolling Stone" is the line from the 1973 Shel Silverstein song (recorded by Dr. Hook and the Medicine show) satirizing the success of a musician and most often quoted as a reference to the milestones achieved in one's career.
As far as we can tell, Grammy-award winner and six-time Grammy nominee, Peter Rowan has never had that particular honor, but in the bluegrass world, making the cover of Acoustic Guitar may just be a higher-level distinction.
In a telephone interview Rowan tells Acoustic Guitar that he can't play bluegrass music without hearing that mandolin guy (Bill Monroe) chopping in his ear. He says that is something that he just can't forget.
He also says Monroe used to stand behind him on stage so only he could hear and yell "Sing it like Peter Rowan" because he (Monroe) felt that Rowan sounded to much like himself.
Rowan talks about his songwriting methods and reminisces about other guitar players he's known and likes (Jerry Garcia and Clarence White).
The Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band consists of dyed-in-the wool traditional players with over 100 years of combined recording and performance experience. Joining guitarist Peter Rowan are Jody Stecher, mandolin; Keith Little, banjo; and Paul Knight, bass. The ensemble has graced the stages of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Grey Fox, Merlefest, Rothbury and numerous other festivals, entertaining audiences with original songs executed in vibrant harmony.
