MARK RABORN JOINS PRESCRIPTION BLUEGRASS CD REVIEW TEAM

Image635029032358394503Prescription Bluegrass welcomes Mark Raborn as our newest CD Reviewer.

Mark is a noted banjo player in multiple genres and a very diversified writer.  From his experiences on stage with Bill Monroe to his writing for “Banjo After Dark,” Mark brings a philosophy of respect for artistic differences.  With so many things like timing, tuning, originality, fidelity, harmony, appeal and flow happening in one recording, Mark says, “It often takes more than one spin to evaluate so many things in a production.”

Prescription Bluegrass Blog editor and radio program host Brian McNeal said, “I'm extremely pleased to bring Mark on board with us just a week after announcing Rita Small's inclusion on the writers' list. More reviewers means more opinions, more diversity and a better service to both the artists and the bluegrass community.”

Who Reads Prescription Bluegrass?

This week, we turn the spotlight on Wayne Taylor.

Formerly the long-running lead man with the U.S. Navy bluegrass band Country Current and now retired from the Navy but still in high-gear with his own band, Appaloosa, he definitely deserves a salute!

FREE Fiddle Lesson–Gift from Prescription Bluegrass and Red Desert Violin

Prescription Bluegrass and Red Desert Violin are excited to announce an absolutely FREE beginning fiddle lesson for bluegrass fans.

“We realize that many folks may have wanted to learn a bluegrass instrument for quite some time but have been intimidated by myths about the difficulty of learning,” said Brian McNeal, host of the Prescription Bluegrass radio program.

Image634846870471706000Using the teaching model of “Make It and Take It”, Red Desert Violin's on-line instructor, Lora Staples, says with just this first 30 minute lesson, you should be able to play a respectable version of “Boil Them Cabbage Down” a well-known bluegrass and old-time standard. With her teaching style, she is confident students can just “Grab it and Go” - "Instant Gratification!"

“If you could learn that in 30 minutes, just imagine what you could learn with a little more time and practice,” says Ms Staples.

Prescription Bluegrass Review - “New Day Dawning” from The Roys!

roysReviewer W.J. Hallock put the headphones on, put the disc in the slot in the old pickup, cranked up the sound-system in the house and thoroughly listened and liked the Roys second release on Rural Rhythm Records.

  • …Brother and sister duo, Lee and Elaine Roy, The Roys, seem to be right on the verge of placing themselves into elite company (of great family bluegrass stars) with their second effort on Rural Rhythm Records, “A New Day Dawning.”
  • …The song-writing tells me that The Roys have a bright future in front of them.
  • …The musicianship is top notch and spot on!

The Roys Host Christmas 4 Kids Golf Tournament!

Celebrities set to take a "swing in the name of charity"

Co-hosted by The Roys - 2011 ICM Bluegrass Artist of the Year and Tennessee Titan Placekicker, #2 - Rob Bironas  Image634576534383100690

The late Conway Twitty, with a little help from friends Loretta Lynn and The Oak Ridge Boys, had a vision to help make children who otherwise would be without a Christmas, enjoy the spirit and joyful times of the Holiday.  Since that time, then known as Christmas Caravan and now incorporated as Christmas For Kids, the organization has helped brighten thousands of children's lives during the Holidays.

Since its debut to the Nashville area, Christmas 4 Kids has had the whole community buzzing with anticipation for its annual events.  Now 29 years later, in the spirit of Twitty and Lynn, Debbie Lamberson, President of Christmas For Kids, Inc., has announced the organization has created an annual golf outing to continue raising awareness and funds.

New CD from Nothin' Fancy on Brand New Label!

Image634576404014620690Recorded at Virginia Dreams Studios in Harrisonburg VA and released on the fledgling Virginia Dreams record label, Nothin' Fancy's new self-titled record is a delight for the senses.  Ranging from straight-up bluegrass to original material to a throwback reworking of Credence Clearwater Revival's "Lookin' Out My Back Door" to the trademark Nothin' Fancy humor in "Grandma Bought A Hog," the whole band is thrilled with the relaxed, down-home atmosphere of this recording.

Says fiddler Chris Sexton, "we worked harder on this record than we ever have before - this is not our first rodeo, and we know what we want the record to feel like.
