Bluegrass and old-time music joined the ranks of governors and iconic news broadcasters last week when Carolina Chocolate Drops founding member, Rhiannon Giddens was awarded the Sam Ragan Fine Arts Award at St. Andrews University.
The presentation was made to Ms. Giddens on February 20th during the weekly Writers' Forum in North Carolina.
Ms. Giddens, a Greensboro, NC native, attended the North Carolina School of Science and Math before moving her career choices to music.
The Sam Ragan Fine Arts Award has previously been presented to former North Carolina Governor, Bob Scott (67th Governor of the state of North Carolina from 1969 to 1973) and News Anchor David Brinkley (NBC and ABC in a career lasting from 1943 to 1997) among others.
The Sam Ragan Fine Arts Award, created in 1981 to honor Ragan, North Carolina's first Secretary of Cultural Resources, is presented annually to recognize outstanding contributions to the Fine Arts of North Carolina.
