After the birth of their daughter last February, they struck out on their own as the duo, Zoe & Cloyd. Their debut duet album, Equinox, released in April 2015, features a diverse array of original and traditional tunes and songs on fiddle, guitar, mandolin and clawhammer banjo, with just two voices and two instruments on each track.
Equinox garnered critical attention and praise, with No Depression listing it as one of the “Outstanding Duo Albums" of 2015 and Bluegrass Unlimited writing, “This is an enchanting debut CD by a young couple with immense respect and passion for traditional music, delivered with exquisite vocal and instrumental ability and the wisdom to play it simply and well.”
The duo has continued to maintain a busy performance schedule, appearing at events such as the Carolina in the Fall Festival and the IBMA Wide Open Bluegrass Festival in 2015. Last September, the couple traveled to Natalya’s home state of Massachusetts to compete in the FreshGrass Festival Duo Contest, taking home first place after their acapella rendition of “Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie.”
Both John and Natalya come from musical lineages; John as the grandson of pioneering bluegrass fiddler Jim Shumate, and Natalya as the granddaughter of a professional klezmer musician and daughter of a jazz pianist. Combining John’s emotive singing and award-winning songwriting, and Natalya’s fiery fiddling and honest vocals, Zoe & Cloyd bring together a unique blend of American music.
Zoe & Cloyd released a live music video this week of a new original song, “Running on Empty.” The song was written a few months after their daughter was born and is a humorous take on their experience as new parents. According to Natalya, they've been getting a great response to the video on Facebook already, with almost 15,000 views and 225 shares in just 36 hours! You can watch the video here inside this news story.
Look for Zoe & Cloyd this spring at the MerleFest on the Road Tour in early March, at MerleFest on April 30th, and at Music City Roots in Nashville on May 18th.
