Prescription Bluegrass Radio Station in New Zealand Off-The-Air by Quake
The tsunami waves that radiated out across the Pacific Ocean from the massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Japan last week lapped every coast of New Zealand, scientists in that country have said. For New Zealanders this is an all too familiar scenario. Just last month a 6.3 quake rocked the nation following a 7.1 quake there in September of 2010.
The Ranch Online, an internet radio station that carries the Prescription Bluegrass Radio program, operating out of Christchurch, New Zealand was affected by the Feburary 2011 quake. Power and Phone service was interrupted and the Internet carrier used by The Ranch Online was knocked out of service. Damage to the studio was minimal according to station owner John Peterson and as of this writing service to the radio broadcast has been restored however much of the city remains in a state of on-going recovery.
According to Darryl Langley, CEO at Audio Tracks Broadcasting Services, the distribution company that handles affiliate relations for Prescription Bluegrass, "Prescription Bluegrass is heard on several Internet as well as traditional radio stations. None of the other stations carrying Prescription Bluegrass were affected."
Peterson says,
Regarding the most recent quake, the first waves of the tsunami, traversing the 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometers) between Japan and New Zealand, hit about 12 hours after quake.
At most of the gauges monitored around the country, the highest waves were not the first to hit. At Timaru, for example, the biggest wave did not occur until more than 40 hours after the first wave hit, scientists reported.
Tsunami waves can continue to bounce around an ocean basin for days and can be amplified by coastal features, such as inlets, and the topography of the ocean floor.

"There are parts of the city including the downtown that are really hurting. I heard an estimate today that 30-40% of the buildings in the downtown will be demolished as they're unfit to use. No city can take that kind of hit and not feel it deeply. As we're very much patterned after an English city, we will lose most of the old architecture that gave the city its character. There are other side effects as well. The traffic in our neighborhood is now bumper to bumper many hours of the day as we are seveal blocks away from one of the major malls that is still open. A mall on the east side of town lost its entire parking garage and will be closed indefinitely. Christchurch also lost all its games for the Rugby World Cup that happens in New Zealand this October. Apart from the damage to the actual stadium, we lost so much of the tourism infrastructure that there just aren't enough hotel rooms, restaurants, etc. to handle RWC visitors. In thinking about the earthquake and the aftermath, it's the component parts of daily life that stand out - things like running water, sewage, roads without cracks and bumps and dips where land has settled or raised. It's also things like having a supermarket open nearby. "
"The main thing I'd like to share is that this experience gives us a small taste of what the Japanese are feeling. Their devastation is hard to comprehend, let alone the added threat of a nuclear disaster."
