FRANKLIN, TN - Franklin's Boyd Mill Farm, home to the 9th Annual BlackBerry Jam Music Festival on June 23rd is presented by Franklin Synergy Bank and ClickPrints. The festival is ready once again to bring musicians from several states together, with a focus on homegrown talent from Middle Tennessee, to help raise money for the Hard Bargain Association and Hands on Nashville.
This year marks the 9th year of the jam, and joining the cast is Mark Newton, longtime bluegrass favorite and the IBMA’s (International Bluegrass Music Association) 2002 Emerging Artist of the Year. Originally from Virginia, the Middle Tennessee based musician, producer and writer is sure to delight fans of acoustic music as he brings his unique sound to the stage. He’ll be performing along with Steve Thomas and his own Stillhouse Band.
Festival goers will find something for everyone, and the exciting addition of soulman, Mike Farris and his Roseland Rhythm Review, the ground is sure to be rocking before long. Other genres will be in the mix as well, from bluegrass to blues music and beyond.
Music starts from the porch stage at 2PM with jam favorite, Tray Eppes, and continues throughout the afternoon and evening until 10PM. Tickets are $15 at the gate, or purchase advance tickets for just $10. Children 12 and under free. Gate opens at 1:30PM. The Musical Petting Zoo, will return after being a a huge hit with the kids in years past. Volunteers will be present to introduce kids to the world of acoustic instruments.
This year's lineup includes one of the most soulful voices around, Mike Farris. The great Buddy Miller (Robert Plant and Band of Joy) said, "Mike Farris has enough heart, soul, and power to light up a city. He mixes up the elements and turns them into something new, beautiful, and uniquely his own."
In June of 2007, Farris released the critically acclaimed Salvation in Lights which married old time roots gospel sounds with his own unique arrangements that were mainly inspired by New Orleans, Stax and the blues. The music was both spiritual and personal for Mike as it dealt with individual struggle but it also had a commonality that music fans from all walks of life could enjoy. In 2008 he won the Americana Music Association's “New & Emerging Artist of the Year” award and started to make a name for himself as a dynamic performer.
In 2008 and 2009 Mike Farris and his Roseland Rhythm Revue performed monthly residencies at Nashville’s’ Station Inn and called it “Sunday Night Shout!” The shows had audiences that consisted of people from all walks of life and the goal was to make the crowd feel “excited, delighted and loved.” The official live recording of the Station Inn shows, Shout! Live, was released in 2009 and won the Gospel Music Association’s Dove Award for “Best Traditional Gospel Album of the Year” in 2010. His voice is mesmerizing and is going to captivate Jam audiences like never before.
Chances are you’ve heard another of the jam’s great performers before, Etta Britt. You might have her voice or seen her on TV in a background vocalist capacity. But, in spite of her modest ambition, the chance is even greater that when you hear Etta Britt sing front and center as a solo artist, relegating her to the background will pretty much be an impossible task. With what she calls a “cool groove record” — her first album for the Wrinkled Records label — Etta stakes her claim as one of the most versatile singers working today. She also happens to write a heart-piercing, soul-affirming tune from time to time. Think Bonnie Raitt meets John Hiatt.
Also performing are some other amazing acoustic acts on the bill including Preston Johnson, Tray Eppes, Carol and Dale, Pat McLaughlin and more and there's always a surprise guest or two who shows up to inject more fun into the party!
Previous headliners have included Colin Linden, Michael McDonald, Carter’s Chord and Canada’s Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. The list goes on, so join us Saturday June 23rd for a musical experience like no other and help us raise some money for great causes.
