Marion, VA- The Award Winning Song of the Mountains Concert Series will present a fundraising concert at the historic Lincoln Theatre in Marion, Virginia on Saturday, June 30th at 7:00 pm.
“Our concert series is in our eighth season of tapings”, says Tim White the executive coordinator and host. “We are a non-profit organization and we are always searching for funding to keep our concert series on public television across America.” says White. “We receive absolutely no funding from PBS as some people might think. We really depend on the support of bluegrass, old time, gospel, classic country and Americana music fans to step forward and make donations anytime they can. We hope many will come to our exciting fundraising concert on June 30th and enjoy a wonderful show.”
The June 30th concert will not be taped for broadcast but will be presented to the public for fundraising efforts.
Scheduled to appear on the concert will be the comedy of Phil Campbell who is the son of the legendary Archie Campbell. Also appearing will be Amber Collins of No Speed Limit, the VW Boys, Skeeter & the Skidmarks, Lonesome Will Mullins, Paula Dellenback and Fox River, Rich In Tradition and the Celtic music of Night Crossing and Fire in the Kitchen. As an added bonus for this concert you will also be treated to the amazing “Magic of Dave Vaught”.
Song of the Mountains was first taped in July of 2005. Since that first year over 1,000 musicians have appeared on the concert series and the show is now broadcast on over 190 public television outlets across America with a potential reach of 146 million viewers.
“We have achieved tremendous things for Smyth County, the State of Virginia and Appalachian Music as a whole”, says White.
“There is not a bigger outlet in the world of broadcasting for our beloved music than Song of the Mountains! I truly believe that our efforts with Song of the Mountains surpasses most other efforts combined when it comes to reaching “the masses” for our featured music forms.” says Joe Ellis the show’s executive producer. “We do need the support of our music fans to keep our show on the air and June 30th will be a good chance for people to show their support,” states Ellis.
If you cannot attend the June 30th fundraising concert there is still a way you can support the show with a tax-deductible donation. At the website www.songofthemountains.org there is a “Give” tab in the upper right-hand corner of the homepage. Supporters and fans of the concert series may donate there as well.
Recently new CDs and DVDs of the “Best of Season 6” were released featuring the music of Doc Watson & Jeff Little, the Chuck Wagon Gang, the Snyder Family, the VW Boys, the McPeak Brothers, the Grascals and a host of other bands who performed on the show’s sixth season of tapings. These recordings are also available at the website and will also help raise funds for the show’s continued production.
As an added bonus for the fundraising concert in Marion on June 30th there will be an unveiling on Willard Gayheart’s commissioned drawing of “Song of the Mountains” at the “Appalachian Spirit Gallery” on Main Street in Marion, Virginia at 5:00 pm prior to the concert. Willard Gayheart is a renowned pencil artist from Woodlawn, Virginia. His drawings are popular around the world for their depiction of Appalachian Music and the lifestyle of the southern Appalachians. Gayheart will offer signed and numbered limited edition prints on June 30th. The edition is limited to 450 prints and 25 artist proofs. Appalachian Spirit Gallery, 144 West Main Street in Marion, is a non-profit organization composed of artisans who share jobs to fulfill the group’s mission tocelebrate the arts, traditions, lore, and spirit of the Appalachian Mountains and to showcase the work oflocal talent.
