Rebel Records announces the release of "The Story Of The Day That I Died", a brand new single from Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice.

The new song can be heard on radio beginning today and the complete project, Story Of The Day That I Died, will be released March 12th.

Expect New Gospel CD From Paul Williams Next Month

Rebel Records  announces the release of Paul Williams’ twelfth album for the label, Going to Stay in the Old-Time Way, on July 31st. Paul and his band the Victory Trio are a fixture on the Bluegrass Gospel circuit and have a significant following in the Southern Gospel field as well, and since Paul’s return to the music world in 1999 he has consistently raised the bar high in both genres. His recordings deliver a hard drive, an emotional touch, and passionate vocals. The result is both great Bluegrass and an inspiring statement of faith.

Former Chesapeake Members Gaudreau and Klein Partner for 2nd Album!

Rebel Records is pleased to announce the release of Jimmy Gaudreau and Moondi Klein’s second Rebel recording, Home from the Mills on May 8th.

The connection between Gaudreau and Klein dates back to the mid-nineties, when they joined forces with ace Dobro player Mike Auldridge and T. Michael Coleman to form the supergroup Chesapeake on three albums of top-flight contemporary acoustic music that appealed to most Bluegrass fans as well as a larger Americana audience.

That group was relatively short-lived as Moondi left to spend more time with a young and growing family. Fast forward to 2007 when some informal picking sessions led to some gigs including a well received tour of England and Scotland. That led to their superb first album entitled 2:10 Train.

DR. RALPH STANLEY NOMINATED FOR GRAMMY® AWARD

Dr. Stanley Earns nomination in the Best Bluegrass Album category, along with former Rebel artist The Steep Canyon Rangers

Rebel recording artist Dr. Ralph Stanley has received a Grammy^® nomination in the “Best Bluegrass Album” category for his recent gospel release A Mother’s Prayer, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced last night.  The nomination is Stanley’s fourth.

“This album is me—it’s what I’m all about,” says the 84-year-old cultural icon. “I’m honored that the Grammy^® voters recognized my work. Of the hundreds of albums I’ve recorded, I count this as one of the best.”

The year 2011 marks the 100^th anniversary of the birth of Bill Monroe, creator of bluegrass, and without doubt one of the most important and influential figures in the history of American music. In a career that began in the late 1930s, Monroe and his band the Blue Grass Boys started a new genre of roots-based music that not only influenced artists world-wide, from Elvis Presley on down, but effectively shaped or changed the lives of literally thousands of professional and amateur musicians.
It is hard to imagine a bluegrass band today that does not include at least a few of Monroe’s songs and tunes in its repertoire, and these two exceptional collections just prove the ongoing strength and influence of his work.

DEHLIA LOW BAND SIGNS WITH REBEL RECORDS!

Debut album Ravens & Crows drops August 2

REBEL RECORDS is proud to announce the signing of young Asheville, NC upstarts Dehlia Low to its stable of artists. The band recently wrapped up recording its label debut at Echo Mountain Studio in Asheville with producer Travis Book of the Grammy-nominated Infamous Stringdusters at the helm. The CD, entitled Ravens & Crows, will be available August 2nd.

Classic Releases from AL Wood and Bill Grant & Delia Bell Get the Digital Treatment

Sing A Bluegrass Song and Rollin Hit Digital Retailers March 22nd This month Rebel Records is pleased to unearth two excellent, but less well-known LPs as part of its campaign to digitally reissue classic albums.  Sing A Bluegrass Songby Al Wood & The Smokey Ridge Boys and Rollin by Bill Grant & Delia Bell hit digital retailers on March 22nd.

Al Wood came from the musically rich area along the North Carolina-Virginia border in Surry County, North Carolina, and along with his brother Odell formed The Smokey Ridge Boys in the 1960s.  The band made a big impact on the fiddlers’ convention circuit gaining recognition as one of the finest traditional bluegrass acts in the region.  After a few 45rpm singles on various labels, Wood signed a contract with Rebel and put out two solid LPs for the label.   Sing A Bluegrass Song was the first and features Odell Wood on bass, Dewey Farmer on mandolin, Lester Deaton on guitar, and Al Wood on banjo and lead vocals.

Bill Grant was one of the most influential figures in bluegrass west of the Mississippi in the 1970s and 80s.  In addition to a successful songwriting and performing career Bill organized the August Hugo Oklahoma Bluegrass Festival – one of the largest and earliest bluegrass festivals.  Along with his singing partner Delia Bell the duo had a prolific recording career producing upwards of ten LPs on several labels including several on their own Oklahoma-based label Kiamichi Records.  Bell was a strong early female voice in bluegrass music, and her composition “Roses In The Snow” would go on to become the title track to Emmylou Harris’s renowned 1980 release.  Released in 1981, Rollin was the second of two albums the duo recorded for Rebel and features Grant on mandolin and vocals, Bell on guitar and vocals, Benny Martin on fiddle, Joe Stuart on lead guitar, Gordon Reid on banjo, and Joe Pointer on bass.  Josh Graves produced the album and lends his dobro talent into the mix.    Rebel Records Website

Ralph Stanley, the most towering figure in traditional Appalachian music, will release A Mother’s Prayer, a newly recorded collection of hymns and spirituals, April 19 on Rebel Records.

           

Determined to find songs that rang true to him emotionally, the 84-year-old Stanley searched through the stark ballads and church music of his youth as well as newer compositions written in the ancient, unadorned Stanley style.  Some of his choices he renders a cappella; in others, he is backed by his Grammy-winning band, the Clinch Mountain Boys.

In the fourth installment of their campaign to make classic releases available for download,  Rebel Records delivers Lily May, Rosie & Susie by The Coon Creek Girls.  The music will be available for purchase through all major digital retailers  on January 18^th.

Female country singers are now commonplace but this was not the case in the late 20s and 30s when the music of the rural south was first becoming a business.  Even rarer then were all-girl string bands, yet the few that did exist were so good that one wonders why more such bands weren’t formed.  One of the best was The Coon Creek Girls, led by Kentucky-born singer, fiddler, and banjo player Lily May Ledford.

They played on the Renfro Valley Barn Dance radio program, albeit with a few personnel changes, from its beginning in Cincinnati in 1937 until 1957.  The band members had since gone on to raise families and work other jobs, but reunited on several occasions in the 1960s during the folk revival.  Lily May, Rosie, & Susie was recorded during this era and derives its title from the recording’s lineup: Lily May Ledford accompanied by her sisters Rosie and Susie.  Tracks such as “Banjo Picking Girl” feature excellent full string band arrangements and harmony vocals, but perhaps most memorable are numbers such as “Red Rocking Chair,” “East Virginia Blues,” and “Pretty Polly” where Lily May appears alone singing and accompanying herself on banjo.


Lily May, Rosie, & Susie marks the first time a full length Coon Creek Girls album has been made available for digital download, an event not to be underestimated given the group’s profound influence on later string bands and country singers.
