Live music kicks off the event with participants enjoying live music at a number of locations along the route.
Named for the museum’s founder and major benefactor, the award is presented annually to a group or individual who has made a significant contribution to the promotion and preservation of America’s instrument, the banjo.

BANJO FEST weekend festivities begin with a reception beginning at 6PM on Thursday, September 7th at the American Banjo Museum in Bricktown. The evening will feature live music - including a very special performance by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder, John McEuen, as well as the presentation of the American Banjo Museum Awards of Excellence.
As Earl Scruggs picked his banjo with machine gun precision at his 1945 debut at the Ryman Auditorium, he set in motion a successful career and enduring legacy that would eclipse anything the humble farm boy from North Carolina could have imagined.
Scruggs’s revolutionary three-finger roll patterns electrified audiences and transformed the banjo into a mainstream solo instrument pursued by innumerable musicians.
The American Banjo Museum was recently awarded a grant for $10,000 from the Kirkpatrick Family Fund to establish a Banjo Learning Lounge at the museum.
The American Banjo Museum’s exhibit, “The Banjo World of Steve Martin” was among several Oklahoma museum exhibits honored by the Oklahoma Museum Association (OMA) during their annual conference on Sept. 21-23.
The most recent honoree in the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame has left us. Banjo pioneer (and one-time Bluegrass Boy with Bill Monroe), Bill Keith died yesterday, October 23rd, 2015.

Arthur Smith, who influenced thousands by way of just one of his compositions and many others just by his unique guitar picking style - among them are: Roy Clark; Glen Campbell and surf music pioneers, The Ventures, died Thursday at his home in Charlotte, NC at age 93.
After a half decade of planning and research, the Earl Scruggs Center—an interactive museum showcasing the life and music of bluegrass legend and Shelby-native, Earl Scruggs—will host the public for a full weekend of grand opening festivities.
The Earl Scruggs Center: Music & Stories from the American South announced final plans for the dedication and grand opening on Saturday, January 11, 2014.
Located in the 1904 Shelby Courthouse on Court Square in downtown Shelby, NC, the center is home to a variety of exhibits that highlight the music, instruments and region that shaped Scruggs’ distinctive style.
The Five-String Fest will be held in Lawndale, N.C. on May 1st – 4th, 2014 and it is only fitting that their first annual lineup would be announced today on the Birthday of Earl Scruggs.
"After much consideration and Inquiring, we feel we have put together some of the greatest banjo players, and bands that will make this inaugural event an immediate classic festival," said festival director, John Lockaby.

We’ve just returned from our second Banjo Safari and the trip was even better than the first. I wasn’t sure what it would be like returning for a second Safari. With the first time being special to me I almost didn’t want to mess with the memory.
